More than 50 guided walks formed the programme of the Walking Festival in June this year.  The festured walk was 'In the Steps of the Mortimers' - a three day walk covering almost 30 miles and visiting many of the sites associated with the Mortimers, the most powerful of the medieval Marcher Lords.

Other longer walks included ‘Right on the Border’ near Hay on Wye, an opportunity to make a weekend of it and combine walking with exploring the myriad book shops;  ‘On the Black Hill’ beginning with a long gentle ascent ending with a short sharp climb and then a splendid ridge walk narrowing slowly with views into the valleys on either side returning along the valley below;   ‘Hills and Churches’ around Colwall combined ten miles below the Malvern Hills whilst learning of villages famed for their cricket and attendant churches.

Lots of shorter walks too covering such diverse subjects as photography, poetry, haunted Hereford, birds, llamas, bats and butterflies.

In 2011, we celebrate the tenth year of the Herefordshire Walking Festival as well as the Year of the Orchard, so expect some really entertaining ideas for exploring this beautiful county.
