Lower Buckton
Lower Buckton Country House dates from the early nineteenth century and its site is mentioned in Domesday. The historic Buckton Mill has its stream running through the gardens and over the oak bridge is the Croquet lawn with far reaching views to the Wigmore Rolls beyond. This is Mortimer Country – on the borders of Herefordshire and Shropshire , where England meets Wales – steeped in historic castles, ancient churches, Roman remains and geological specimens.
The kitchen garden provides vegetables for the table; the old farmyards have free-range hens for their eggs and rare-breed pigs for old-fashioned pork with real taste for delicious dinners and brilliant breakfasts. All food served is homemade and locally caught, sought or bought. All foodie likes, dislikes and diets are catered.
Log fires in antique chimney pieces, ancestral portraits, antique furniture and curious collections are throughout the house. The spacious bedrooms have views for miles, deep comfortable beds, linen and fine cotton sheets, fluffy bathrobes, quality smellies, tins of homemade biscuits with proper coffee & tea and a mini-fridge, CD radio and DVD/video.
There are boot-scrapes, an area to hose-down muddy boots and room to dry outdoor clothing. We’ll lend you maps and local books, fill flasks, provide picnics, supply plasters for blisters and send you on your way happy and refreshed. We’ll pick up or drop off you or your luggage. You can even bring your dog or your horse. Open all year including Christmas and New Year. Three rooms – six guests. “Walk yourself back to happiness in Buckton!”
